Installation Guide DF12T (Tall)

Determine Deck Flush Location

The first step is to locate the best spot for your Deck Flush. Many deck or patio surfaces require directing debris from corners, around the pool and trying to get the debris to a doorway.

Deck Flush allows you to select a precise flushing point to get rid of debris instead of using the doorways. It may take more than one Deck Flush to solve your flushing needs.

Your deck or patio surface will tell you where to install a Deck Flush. Usually it will be where water puddles or algae grows on your deck's surface. In most cases the best location will be near a corner.  Although Deck Flush is not a drain it will release standing water after a rain event. So locate your Deck Flush based on your situation.

Prepare for Installation

Place your Deck Flush on top of the screen rail and center it between two of the anchor bolts holding the rail to the concrete slab. This is a good time to inspect the rail and bolts in the event that these items need to be replaced.

If the lower screen rail, anchor bolts or replacement screen is needed, they can be purchased at your local home improvement store.

Mark Cut Locations

Hold your Deck Flush firmly to the rail and mark the outer edge of the side bracket. Use a scribe tool or a pencil.

This is a very important step, so mark twice and cut once.

Once marked, set your Deck Flush off to the side.

Remove the Existing Spline

Use a hook tool to carefully remove the existing spline on each side of the proposed location of your Deck Flush installation location.

The screen spline needs to be removed to allow for cutting of the lower screen rail, so refer to your scribe marks and remove about 6" of spline on either side of your marks.

You should plan on replacing the old spline because it will usually be dry and breaks as it is being removed. Be careful not to damage the screen material or you may need to replace the screen panel during installation.

Cut the Screen Rail

It is best to use a hand hacksaw for this step. If a large hacksaw is all you have then more of the screen will need to be removed to allow access for the saw between the lower rail and the loosened screen.

Carefully start to cut the lower rail. This can be tough going if you try to cut to quickly. Take your time and use precise cutting strokes. Also be careful not to mark the tile or concrete surfaces. These pictures show a pool deck surface that was overlaid with an acrylic textured surface so it is raised about a 1/4" above the original concrete slab.

It is likely that you will cut through the outer edge of the rail first and it may be difficult to get the inner edge cut all the way through.

Remove Your Rail Strip

If the inner edges are difficult to cut due to the chance of damaging the deck surface, then firmly hold the rail and bend it back and forth until it breaks loose.

Now take a water hose and rinse the installation area thoroughly so the rail sets firmly on the base concrete.

If the existing rail is loose, new anchor bolts maybe required at this point.

Mount Your Deck Flush

Now place your Deck Flush in the opening and check for a tight fit. DO NOT force or hammer your Deck Flush into the gap. This may bend the side frame and keep the door from swinging freely.

Take one of the self tapping screws that were supplied with your Deck Flush and install one screw using a small powered drill driver. Be careful to firmly hold your Deck Flush and keep it centered and flush with the screen rail.

Once one screw is installed (DON'T OVER TIGHTEN) alternate to the other side and repeat the screw installation for the remaining three screws.

Attach Your Screen

The remaining steps will be performed outside of screen enclosure to access the back of your Deck Flush unit.

Remove the attached screen edge clamping strip that was shipped on your Deck Flush and keep it nearby, also do not get any debris into the groove of the screen edge clamp.

Trim Screen to Fold into Deck Flush

Using a knife or blade, carefully cut the screen to match the inner edge of your Deck Flush. Only cut enough to fold the screen inward and under the backing plate of your Deck Flush.

Hold in place while you locate the screen edge clamping strip.

Install Clamping Strip

It will be helpful for someone to be on the inside of the screen enclosure for this step.

Have your helper hold down on your Deck Flush from the inside or the enclosure as you fold the screen under the back rail and firmly push the edge clamping strip onto the back plate capturing the screen. This will lock the screen in place.

It may help to use a block of wood and a screwdriver to assist in leveraging the clamping strip up onto your Deck Flush backing plate.

Reinstall the Screen

Now take your new screen spline and carefully reinstall the screen back into the groove on the screen rail.

If you have trouble reinstalling the old screen back into the lower rail you may need to consider installing a new screen panel.

Please make sure you get a good tight fit of the old screen back into the rail.
